The Division of Public Safety is a team of public safety professionals that work collaboratively with our community to keep Cornell a safe and healthy campus to learn and live.  The Public Safety Division is currently comprised of the Public Safety Communications Center, University Police, Emergency Management, Access Control, and the Community Response Team.  This position offers the opportunity to play a key role in a coordinated public health and safety leadership team. This job provides the opportunity to be engaged with top public safety professionals in their field. The successful candidate will be joining the University during a transformative time as we work with our community to reimagine public safety in order to develop new, progressive public safety initiatives, policies, and intelligence led practices.

The Community Response Team is a person-centered, trauma-informed mobile crisis care program serving persons in crisis on Cornell’s Ithaca campus. CRT’s objective is to provide an in-person and health-centered response to non-violent 911 crisis calls and thereby reduce the need for police response. The team employs holistic healthcare expertise to de-escalate emergency situations and assist persons in crisis to navigate their way out. CRT plays a key role as the supportive interface linking persons in crisis, the Division of Public Safety, and wraparound services across the Ithaca area.

    What you will do:
As part of the Division of Public Safety leadership team, the Director of the Community Response Team will lead a team of clinicians and response coordinators who provide behavioral health services and facilitate resource connection in partnership with individuals in crisis on Cornell’s Ithaca campus. The team works in concert with other emergency response resources such as Cornell Emergency Management Services, Cornell Environment Health & Safety, Cornell EMS, Cornell Public Safety Communications Center , and the Cornell University Police to respond to calls for service, conduct socio-clinical assessments, make appropriate referrals and handoffs to appropriate wraparound university, city, and county services, and provide interim case management in close collaboration with the Cornell University Care and Crisis Services team. Housed with other first response resources in the Division of Public Safety, the Community Response Team (CRT) plays a key role across Cornell’s health and safety crisis response infrastructure of prioritizing the diversion of individuals in crisis from punitive harm and facilitating their connection to supportive resources.

You will lead the collaborative programmatic development, evaluation, expansion, hiring, and training of the CRT, involving policy development, training curriculum design, and other appropriate short-term and long-term goals and objectives. You will play a central role in directing collaborative efforts across the university emergency response and health units to develop and operationalize policies and practices supportive of trauma-informed, person-centered relationships of care that reduce the harms of punitive systems and further the university’s educational mission. You will occasionally serve as a response clinician and may be expected to provide clinical supervision to staff. You will be able to do perform shift work and assume on-call responsibilities (nights, weekends, and holidays) as needed.

    Who you are:
You are a positive, customer service orientated person who takes pride in providing prompt, courteous service to all. You possess exceptional interpersonal skills, empathy and openness to new ideas and perspectives on a wide range of topics and proven ability to translate abstract ideas into actionable results. Additionally, you exercise sound judgement and decision making with urgent and sensitive information. You have strong communication skills and build effective working relationships with a broad range of individuals and organizations. You will have knowledge of collaborative techniques and coordinated community response models and the ability to balance strategic, big-picture thinking with efficient management of day-to-day processes.

Ideally, you will have experience in social services, emergency first response, behavioral health emergencies, crisis care (i.e. domestic violence or sexual assault support) or similar health related field, preferably in a leadership position  You have lived experience of criminal justice system contact, addiction and recovery, or homelessness; experience working in higher education and/or with youth around crisis, mental health and/or wellness; experience working with diverse publics, preferably in an educational environment. What we offer:

Great benefits that include educational benefits, access to a plethora of wellness programs, employee discounts, health care, paid vacation, health/personal time, 12 university paid holidays (including end of year winter break through New Year’s Day) and employer retirement contributions.
